Smashing Science

The Smashing Science programme is co-presented by InsightAMBERUCD Science Expression and Happenings who come together to host a series of films, discussions and interactions with scientists across the fields of materials science, sports analytics and physics.

Each event takes place in the CHQ Building and kicks off at 18.30 with an inspiring short film to introduce the theme of the evening and warm up the audience for the dynamic post screening panel and audience discussion with leading scientists and thinkers.

SFI Scientists Celebrate the Power of Science

Scientists at Science Foundation Ireland’s seven Research Centres around the country are planning to Celebrate the Power of Science during Science Week. There will be something for all ages, from robotics to photonics, from crystals to disgusting digestion, from nanotechnology to big data, from global warming to smashing science movies!

The Celebrate Science Festival which will run in conjunction with Science Week Ireland from November 9th to 15th,  is organised by the education and public engagement staff in SFI’s Research Centres in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dublin and is funded through SFI Discover’s Education & Public Engagement programme . 

The aim of the Celebrate Science festival is to promote the relevance of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in our everyday lives and to demonstrate their importance to the future development of Irish society and to the economy.

Throughout Science Week (Nov 9th to 15th) there will be open days, events and competitions that appeal to adults and schools with a series of lectures, primary school visits, secondary school science workshops and more.

The Cork Family Open Day will kick-off Celebrate Science week on Sunday November 9th in the UCC Western Gateway building with over 30 different workshops and displays for adults and children. Children and adults can choose from Lego Robotics, Photonics, Disgusting Digestion, Maths and other workshops. There will be dancing robots, electric cars and raspberry pis. For the adults there will be tours of the UCC Brewery & Bakery and the world-renowned FLAME lab where our future doctors learn about the human body. And lots, lots more.  An Open Evening of IPIC@Tyndall will take place from 7-9pm on Wednesday 12th November.

Limerick Family Science Day will take place on Saturday 15th November beginning early in the day with science buskers at the Milk Market and followed by a full programme of  family science events at the Hunt Museum and finishing with a PubScience event at Locke’s Bar.

Smashing Science Films will take place in Dublin’s CHQ building at the IFSC in Dockands from Thursday 13-Saturday 15th November. The films will include Particle Fever, Moneyball and The Man in the White Suit and will follow science research demonstrations each day. Additional films and teacher resources will also be available.

Curious Film – Pop up cinema

Join UCD Science Expression during Festival of Curiosity for the summertime screenings of short films about curiosity, science and discovery at The National Botanic Gardens on Saturday July 26th & Sunday July 27th from 12pm.

Attention all budding young minds! Prepared to be wowed by some of the most vivid and innovative short films from around the globe exploring science, curiosity and discovery.

Brought to you by UCD Science Expression in partnership with The Festival of Curiosity. This 30 minute short film programme starts at 12:00 with last show at 17:00pm.

Curious Films from the nanosphere to the wonder of solar power we discover how small is really small and how mushrooms can save the world!
