ChemEd Conference 2018

The 37th ChemEd Conference will be hosted by Trinity College Dublin on Saturday the 20th October with the theme of “Bridging the Gaps”.

The day will be officially opened by Prof. Mike Lyons, head of the School of Chemistry at Trinity College Dublin. The morning session will start with our Education Plenary speaker Dr. Michael Seery, based at the University of Edinburgh, who will speak to us about strategies for classroom-based education research and recent chemistry education developments as Chairperson of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) ChemEd Research Group (CERG). Prof. Sylvia Draper will then give us an overview of the TCD extra-curricular programmes available for students such as the annual Chemistry Summer School, Nano in my life by CRANN and TY Programmes. Our Keynote Speaker Prof. Sir Martyn Poliakoff will take the floor just after the coffee break with a talk based around the upcoming International Year of the Periodic Table 2019.

Workshops will then take place either side of lunch and confirmed so far is one run by Junior Cycle for Teachers (JCT) on successful investigations for students, and another based on Risk Management in the lab.

The afternoon will kick off with our Academic Plenary speaker, Prof. Valeria Nicolosi from the AMBER research centre and previous recipient of The SFI Early Career Researcher Award. She has received multiple ERC (European Research Council) grants to the tune of €12million and her work focuses on advanced 2D nanomaterials, particularly in relation to energy storage and efficiency. The afternoon will continue with short snappy talks from industry professionals about their day to day work, to give us an idea of modern industrial chemistry careers.

Finally, the day will finish with a talk by Dr. Fiona Desmond from the State Examinations Commission (SEC) about state assessment for Leaving Cert Chemistry. She will provide some information on the recent practical assessment trials, the Leaving Cert Chemistry exam paper and changes to the Leaving Cert science subjects where possible.

All ticket prices include tea/coffee with snacks in the morning and a full hot lunch. Attendees will also receive electronic copies of all resources and talks after the conference. Certification of attendance will also be provided. Book via Eventbrite!

Internship at CRANN

CRANN, Ireland’s leading Nanoscience Research Institute in Trinity College, is hoping to add another module to the ‘Nano in my Life’ series for TY students, and would like to get a second level science teacher on board to assist in designing content, as they did with the first set of modules.
The two week internship will be a paid position based in CRANN at Trinity College. It is a unique opportunity to learn more about nanoscience in CRANN, a world-class facility. You will be developing supplemental material for the ‘Nano in my Life’ module series focusing on the concept of building nano materials and exploring the various ways this can be achieved. The content that you develop will be professionally designed and available for download from September 2013 for teachers nationwide.

You do not need a great knowledge of nanoscience but enthusiasm, creativity, good research and writing skills are essential. Further details are attached.

If you are interested in working with them or discussing it informally, please contact Éilis McGrath, Education and Outreach Team, telephone: 01-8964621 or email eilis.mcgrath@tcd.ie.

Closing date for applications is 5pm, Monday 8th July.
