PharmaChemical Ireland Teacher Awards 2012

Congratulations to Crana College, Buncrana, Co. Donegal, who were awarded the first place prize of €1,200 for their Science department in the 2012 ISTA PharmaChemical Ireland Teacher Awards. 

Congrats also to the Science departments in Donabate Community College and St. Columba’s College, Whitechurch, who were runners up in the event and received €600 each.

Thanks also to Ms Aoibhinn Ní Shuilleabháin who did an excellent job at chairing the presentations by each team entitled ‘Enhancing the uptake of science subjects’ and the judges, who included an external Fulbright Fellow Prof William McComas from the University of Arkansas.

ISTA Senior Science Quiz National Final 2012

Congratulations to the winners of the ISTA Senior Science Quiz National Final which was held in Trinity College. Thanks to all the students who participated, ISTA teachers who attended, our guest quizmaster Arlene O’Neill and our special guests, Philip Watt CEO of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Charlie Dolan, Honorary President of ISTA. ISTA Senior Science Quiz Final 2011 – The Results!

SciFest Grand Award winners 2011 take on the world and win top award

Congratulations to Ruairi O’Neill and Eoghan Flynn, whose project, entitled ‘Polyfuel: A Novel Solution to Fuel Shortages and Disposal of ELPs’ was awarded second place at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Ruairi O’Neill and Eoghan Flynn from Blackwater Community School, Lismore, Co. Waterford, represented SciFest and Ireland at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania last week and proved that science education in Ireland is still among the best in the world.

Their project, entitled ‘Polyfuel: A Novel Solution to Fuel Shortages and Disposal of ELPs’ was awarded second place in the Environmental Management Category ($1500).

Ruairi and Eoghan were awarded the Intel Best Project Award in SciFest@CollegeWIT in April 2011. In October they competed in SciFest@Intel alongside the other SciFest@College winners, one from each IT and from the University of Ulster. As overall winners at SciFest@Intel their prize was to represent Ireland at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 13-18 May 2012.

Congratulations again to Ruairi and Eoghan and to their teacher David King.

ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Showcase & Awards Ceremony

Green teens from St. Josephs College, Athlone were crowned the 2012 Overall Senior ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalists of the year for their ‘Wormery Works’ project with the 2012 Overall Junior Award scooped by teens from Our Lady & St. Patrick’s College, Belfast for the ‘The Big Tidy Up,’ at Awards Ceremony held in the Round Room of the Mansion House, in Dublin on 8th May.

In attendance were over 600 young people and special guests Ms. Frances Fitzgerald, Minister for Children Youth Affairs, Andrew Montague, Lord Mayor of Dublin and the youthful master of ceremonies, Stephen Byrne, RTÉ presenter. The group from St Joseph’s College Summerhill implemented a successful wormery and waste reduction campaign in their school. Thanks to their winning worms and inspiring awareness raising activities, this group is reducing waste in their school, supplying their organic garden with compost and setting an excellent environmental example for their peers and the public. The ‘Big Tidy Up’ from Our Lady and St. Patricks in Belfast, carried out an anti-litter campaign which reached global levels as they linked up with schools in Croatia and Washington.
