TIMSS Study 2023 – Irish Students Top EU Countries
Irish students have once scored highly in the latest Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2023. The results show that both fourth class pupils and second year students in Ireland performed significantly above international averages in Maths and Science. Ireland is placed as the top-performing EU country in Maths and Science at the second-year level. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the unprecedented disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years. The ISTA would like to thank their members, who no doubt contribute to the success of Irish students in TIMSS. Teachers have played a crucial role in maintaining a stable and equitable education system despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and issues with Junior Cycle Science. Their ability to adapt to new teaching methods and provide consistent support to students has been instrumental in achieving these results. No doubt, initiatives like SciFest and the BT Young Scientist Exhibition also play a role. While there is still room for improvement, particularly in supporting girls in mathematics and science, the overall performance of Irish students in international tests is a testament to the quality of education provided by Irish teachers.
