Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar 

From July 13th – 16th the IFI will collaborate with Science Gallery Dublin, to bring you a feast of science fact and fiction films including Philip Kaufman’s Oscar-winning The Right Stuff on 70mm and Emer Reynold’s award-winning documentaryThe Farthest.

 

Other films currently confirmed for the festival include Robert Wise’s The Andromeda Strain, which will be introduced by Lauren McKeown, who has previously studied at NASA’s AMES Research Centre in Silicon Valley. There will also be a rare big screen outing for Shane Carruth’s Primer, which will be introduced by Sean Power from Trinity College Dublin’s Department of Philosophy, plus a very special screening of Saul Bass’s influential Phase IV, which will screen with a newly-restored alternate ending.

Royal Society of Chemistry

The RSC education team aim to support Chemistry teachers and enable them to inspire their students into pursuing a future in the chemical sciences. Angela McKeown is working as the RSC coordinator for Ireland. Several events have been organised for Science Week. RSC are hosting a "Chemistry Careers" event on Friday 16th November (10.30am – 12.30pm) in association with Trinity College. Teachers are invited to bring classes of Transition Year and senior Chemistry students to the Stanley Quek lecture theatre in the new Biosciences Institute at Trinity College. (Please note that this building is 152-160 Pearse Street – check out directions on line). The event will feature short career talks from a wide variety of speakers, all of whom have studied Chemical Sciences. Some postgraduate students from Trinity will also demonstrate an interactive showcase of their reserach. The event is completely free but only has space for 300 students so advance booking is essential and places will be assigned on a first come basis.

SFI Scientists Celebrate the Power of Science

Scientists at Science Foundation Ireland’s seven Research Centres around the country are planning to Celebrate the Power of Science during Science Week. There will be something for all ages, from robotics to photonics, from crystals to disgusting digestion, from nanotechnology to big data, from global warming to smashing science movies!

The Celebrate Science Festival which will run in conjunction with Science Week Ireland from November 9th to 15th,  is organised by the education and public engagement staff in SFI’s Research Centres in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dublin and is funded through SFI Discover’s Education & Public Engagement programme . 

The aim of the Celebrate Science festival is to promote the relevance of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in our everyday lives and to demonstrate their importance to the future development of Irish society and to the economy.

Throughout Science Week (Nov 9th to 15th) there will be open days, events and competitions that appeal to adults and schools with a series of lectures, primary school visits, secondary school science workshops and more.

The Cork Family Open Day will kick-off Celebrate Science week on Sunday November 9th in the UCC Western Gateway building with over 30 different workshops and displays for adults and children. Children and adults can choose from Lego Robotics, Photonics, Disgusting Digestion, Maths and other workshops. There will be dancing robots, electric cars and raspberry pis. For the adults there will be tours of the UCC Brewery & Bakery and the world-renowned FLAME lab where our future doctors learn about the human body. And lots, lots more.  An Open Evening of IPIC@Tyndall will take place from 7-9pm on Wednesday 12th November.

Limerick Family Science Day will take place on Saturday 15th November beginning early in the day with science buskers at the Milk Market and followed by a full programme of  family science events at the Hunt Museum and finishing with a PubScience event at Locke’s Bar.

Smashing Science Films will take place in Dublin’s CHQ building at the IFSC in Dockands from Thursday 13-Saturday 15th November. The films will include Particle Fever, Moneyball and The Man in the White Suit and will follow science research demonstrations each day. Additional films and teacher resources will also be available.
