ReelLife Science

The winners of ReelLIFE SCIENCE 2016 were announced as Gaelscoil Riabhach, Loughrea, Co. Galway at primary school level and Patrician High School, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan at secondary school level. Their videos were selected by a panel of Special Guest Judges from over 200 short science videos, produced by more than 2,000 students in 104 schools around Ireland.

Selecting the best videos to share the €3000 prize fund were University College London neuroscientist and Royal Society Fellow Prof. Eleanor Maguire, BT Young Scientist & Technologists of the Year 2016, Maria Louise Fufezan and Diana Bura from Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan and RTE broadcaster and science enthusiast Rick O’Shea, who said “It was a genuine pleasure to go through all the entries in this year’s competition. Some were of such an incredibly high quality. I just wish the tech and the teaching that obviously goes behind this was around when I was in school!

All winning videos can be seen below and will be shown to the public as part of the Galway Science and Technology Exhibition, held in NUI Galway on Sunday 27 November.

ReelLife Science Competition 2016

ReelLife Science competition is linking in with Science Foundation Ireland’s #sciencerising campaign with ‘Irish Science Heroes’ topic at secondary level, while for primary schools, they can choose ‘The Science of Farming’.
The full list of topics is as follows: 

Primary – The Heart; Life in Space; Science and Me; Our Many Senses; The Science of Farming.  
Secondary – The Brain; Myths Busted!; How Things Work; Irish Science Heroes; Everyday Biotechnology.

Special Guest Judges for this year is made up of broadcaster and science enthusiast, Rick O’Shea, University College London neuroscientist and Royal Society Fellow Prof. Eleanor Maguire and BT Young Scientist & Technologists of the Year 2016, Maria Louise Fufezan and Diana Bura from Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan. 

 

The competition is supported by NUI Galway, Science Foundation Ireland and the CÚRAM Centre for Research in Medical Devices, with a prize fund of €3000 for the schools. As always, winning videos will be announced during Science Week on November 14th and the prizes will be presented and the best videos screened at the Galway Science and Technology Festival on November 27th.
