SFI Scientists Celebrate the Power of Science

Scientists at Science Foundation Ireland’s seven Research Centres around the country are planning to Celebrate the Power of Science during Science Week. There will be something for all ages, from robotics to photonics, from crystals to disgusting digestion, from nanotechnology to big data, from global warming to smashing science movies!

The Celebrate Science Festival which will run in conjunction with Science Week Ireland from November 9th to 15th,  is organised by the education and public engagement staff in SFI’s Research Centres in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dublin and is funded through SFI Discover’s Education & Public Engagement programme .

The aim of the Celebrate Science festival is to promote the relevance of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in our everyday lives and to demonstrate their importance to the future development of Irish society and to the economy.

Throughout Science Week (Nov 9th to 15th) there will be open days, events and competitions that appeal to adults and schools with a series of lectures, primary school visits, secondary school science workshops and more.

The Cork Family Open Day will kick-off Celebrate Science week on Sunday November 9th in the UCC Western Gateway building with over 30 different workshops and displays for adults and children. Children and adults can choose from Lego Robotics, Photonics, Disgusting Digestion, Maths and other workshops. There will be dancing robots, electric cars and raspberry pis. For the adults there will be tours of the UCC Brewery & Bakery and the world-renowned FLAME lab where our future doctors learn about the human body. And lots, lots more.  An Open Evening of IPIC@Tyndall will take place from 7-9pm on Wednesday 12th November.

Limerick Family Science Day will take place on Saturday 15th November beginning early in the day with science buskers at the Milk Market and followed by a full programme of  family science events at the Hunt Museum and finishing with a PubScience event at Locke’s Bar.

Smashing Science Films will take place in Dublin’s CHQ building at the IFSC in Dockands from Thursday 13-Saturday 15th November. The films will include Particle Fever, Moneyball and The Man in the White Suit and will follow science research demonstrations each day. Additional films and teacher resources will also be available.

All of the information on Celebrate Science week can be seen on our website www.celebratescience.eu.  Many of the events need to be booked, so don’t delay!

International Year of Biodiversity 2010

Biodiversity concerns everybody. The actions of every single individual are essential to guarantee that human impact on biodiversity is reduced and that the survival of future generations is ensured.

Write your message for biodiversity!
It is simple, just click here and submit your personal card. Hundreds of cards will be collected and put together in a large photo mosaic illustrating biodiversity.

The mosaic will be displayed on the Countdown 2010 website and at major events worldwide such as the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in October in Japan where world leaders will define the future of global biodiversity policy and a new biodiversity target.

The Countdown 2010 team will collect cards also at some major events, as well as on the Countdown 2010 website. Come at IUCN stand during the European Commission’s Green Week and add your own biodiversity message!

The International Day for Biological Diversity 2010 focuses on the links between biodiversity, human development and people’s livelihoods. Here are some facts:
  • Three-quarters of the world’s poorest people depend on natural resources for their daily existence.
  • One billion people worldwide depend on drugs derived from forest plants for their medicinal needs.
  • One billion people in developing countries rely on fish as their main source of food, while an estimated 38 million people are employed directly by fishing and many more in the processing stages.
  • 60 percent of key ecosystem services are being degraded or used unsustainably.

Celebrate this day with us! Send us your biodiversity card!
